AI passport photo apps compared: what to check before paying
How to compare AI passport photo services: price, a check before payment, refund on rejection, country coverage and language, with our own answers alongside.
Why this comparison exists
We are Foto2Pass, so we have a conflict of interest. That is why this post does not score other services: we cannot check their prices and policies for you every week, and they change. Instead, here is what to compare, with our own answers next to it. Ask any service the same questions.
| What to compare | Question to ask | Foto2Pass |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Is the full price shown before you start? Are prints and shipping extra? | Digital photo €8.99 in euro countries, $9.99 in the US, £7.99 in the UK. Shipping is shown before you pay. |
| Check before payment | Does the service check the photo against your country's rules before you pay, or only after? | Yes. Retakes before you pay are free. |
| If the photo is rejected | Do you get your money back, or only a reprint? | Full refund when the authority rejects the photo (send the rejection notice within 60 days). |
| Your country | Does the service know your country's size, head height and background? | 24 countries. |
| Language | Can you use it in your own language? | 16 languages. |
What matters most
A check before you pay
Most services can remove a background and crop a face. The difference is whether the photo is checked against your country's rules (head size, background, expression, glasses) before you pay, and whether the service tells you what to fix.
What happens after a rejection
Read the refund policy before you order. “We will make a new photo” is not the same as “you get your money back”. Check what proof the service asks for and how long you have to claim.
Your country and document
Rules differ per country and sometimes per document. A service should know when it cannot help: in Sweden, for example, the police take the passport photo themselves, so no app can make it for you.
Free apps
Free phone apps often crop the photo without checking the official rules, or add a watermark until you pay. That can be fine for a quick preview. For the real application, check what the app actually verifies.
The honest take
Many applicants will get an acceptable photo from more than one service. The difference shows up in the hard cases: glasses with glare, religious headwear, babies, poor lighting. There the check matters, and so does the refund policy. Pick a service that takes responsibility when the photo is rejected.
