What Austrian authorities check

Austrian biometric passport and ID-card photos follow the spec on oesterreich.gv.at. The rules are close to Germany's (35 × 45 mm, light background), but clear glasses are allowed. Live spec on our Austria passport photo page.

The numbers

  • Print size: 35 × 45 mm.
  • Face height: about two thirds of the photo and at most 36 mm (chin to crown). We use 32-36 mm.
  • Resolution: our Austrian file is 300 DPI.
  • Background: plain and light, ideally grey (BMI).
  • Maximum age: 6 months.
  • Glasses allowed if the eyes are clearly visible. Only tinted lenses, sunglasses and reflections on the lenses are rejected.

Where you submit it

Reisepass and Personalausweis are issued by your Bezirksamt (in Vienna: Magistratisches Bezirksamt). Book through your local government portal.

Take it at home

Daylight, plain light wall, phone at eye level. Our AI measures the face height, crops to the Austrian format, replaces the background with light grey, and delivers the file at 300 DPI: start your Austrian passport photo.
