Photomaton or online? France wants an approved booth or pro
A French passport or ID card photo must come from a licensed professional or an approved booth, so an online photo does not work. What to do instead.

Many people in France use a Photomaton booth in a station or shopping centre. For a French passport or identity card the choice is smaller than it looks: the photo must be taken by a licensed professional photographer or an approved booth, according to service-public.gouv.fr. A photo you take at home, or one from an online service such as ours, is not accepted.
So we do not sell a French passport or ID card photo.
What to do
- Use a booth that is approved for ID photos, or go to a licensed photographer.
- Ask on the spot when you are not sure whether a booth is approved.
- Remember: no white background, and a bare head.
