Switzerland passport photo: passport office and ID card
Swiss passport photos are taken at the passport office; an ID card needs a paper photo. fedpol criteria: 35 x 45 mm, 29-34 mm face, plain neutral background.
Passport or identity card: where the photo comes from
For a Swiss passport, the photo is normally taken at the cantonal passport office when you apply. You do not bring your own photo, so we cannot make that one for you.
For an identity card applied for at your municipality, fedpol says you need a paper photo that meets the criteria below. That is the photo Foto2Pass can make. Details on fedpol.admin.ch.
The criteria
From the fedpol criteria sheet for passport and ID photos:
- Size: 35 x 45 mm, without a border.
- Face height: 29-34 mm from chin to crown (children under 11: at least 23 mm).
- Background: plain, uniform and neutral, without shadows. fedpol names no colour.
- Expression: neutral, mouth closed, shoulders straight.
- Glasses: allowed, but no tinted lenses or sunglasses.
- Headwear: only for proven medical or religious reasons.
- Age of the photo: at most 1 year.
The Swiss face-height range (29-34 mm) is lower than the German one (32-36 mm), so a photo made for a German document does not automatically fit in Switzerland.
