Passport photo rejected: what to do (7 causes and fixes)

If they rejected you, here is probably why

Counter rejections are rarely random. Most come down to one of the seven causes below. Find the one that applies, fix it, and try again.

1. Face too large or too small. Country specs require chin-to-crown within a 4-5 mm window. Your face was outside it. Tell-tale sign: the clerk held a ruler against the photo. Fix: re-crop with mm-precision software, not by eye.
2. Background not uniform. Shadow, texture, colour gradient. Fix: digital background replacement to the exact spec colour.
3. Wrong background colour. Submitted white where light grey was required, or vice versa. Fix: check the country spec in our background colour guide.
4. Glasses on. Many countries want glasses off, and where they are allowed a reflection is enough for a rejection. Fix: take them off. See our glasses guide.
5. Photo too old. Many countries: 6 months. UK: taken in the last month. Fix: take a new one.
6. Visible expression problem. Smile, parted lips, raised brows, head tilted. Fix: take a few photos and pick the most neutral.
7. Eyes not fully visible. Hair across a brow, lens reflection (where glasses are still permitted), eye half-closed. Fix: brush hair back, take glasses off.

What to ask if you're unsure

Counter clerks don't always volunteer the reason. Always ask:

• “Which specific rule did the photo fail?” This gets you a concrete answer instead of “the photo isn't good”.
• “What measurement is wrong?” The answer is often a number or a rule (face height, background, age).
• “Can I come back with a new photo today?” That can save you a new appointment.
